Why Lab Tested Cannabis Matters

A South African study analysed 279 cannabis product samples collected from the local market over two years. Nearly four in ten, 37%, failed basic solvent residue safety limits, the kind of thing that shows up when extraction isn't done properly and leftover processing chemicals end up in the final product. Here's the part that makes it worse. Almost none of the cannabis changing hands in South Africa right now is legally required to be tested for anything at all. Commercial sale outside the narrow licensed medical channel remains unregulated while the country finalises proper commercial rules, so testing isn't a box anyone has to tick. It's optional, and most of the market skips it.

What Lab Testing Checks For

Potency. Confirming the THC and CBD percentages match what's on the label, not just what someone estimated by eye. Mislabelled potency is a well documented problem in markets around the world, and there's no reason to assume South Africa is the exception.

Pesticides. Cannabis is good at pulling contaminants out of the soil and holding onto them, which matters a lot when the plant is often smoked rather than washed like produce.

What a Certificate of Analysis Shows

A Certificate of Analysis, usually shortened to COA, is the real lab report behind a product, showing measured results rather than a marketing claim. A proper one lists cannabinoid percentages, and ideally results across the contaminant categories above, pass or fail against a defined limit, not just a vague "tested" sticker with nothing behind it.
